Five desk lighting fixes for the hours after the sun goes down

One harsh ceiling bulb is why your desk feels like an office at 9pm. These five changes fix that, and only two of them cost anything.

Bad desk lighting rarely announces itself. You just notice that you stop working earlier than you meant to, that your eyes feel tired before your brain does, and that the room reads as somewhere you have to be rather than somewhere you want to sit.

Almost always the cause is the same: a single bright source overhead, and nothing at desk level. Fix the direction the light comes from and the desk changes character completely.

01

Put a light source at desk level

Overhead light comes from behind you, which means your own head casts a shadow onto exactly the place you are trying to look at. A lamp on the desk lights the work surface directly, from the side, at the height your eyes are already at.

Warm and dimmable matters more than bright. The goal after dark is a pool of light on the desk, not a lit room.

Start here: This single change does more than the other three combined. If you stop after step one, you have still fixed the main problem.

Light the desk without lighting the screen

A lamp helps the desk but can bounce off the monitor, and a bright room behind a bright screen is what actually causes the squinting.

A light bar clips to the top of the monitor and throws light down onto the desk, away from the panel. The screen stays clean, the keyboard is lit, and nothing shines back at you.

Why this one is specific: A normal lamp placed behind the monitor creates glare. A bar is shaped to avoid exactly that - it is the one lighting product where the form is the whole point.

Give the desk its own light you can aim

A ceiling light is fixed in the wrong place. It sits behind you or off to one side, so it lights the room but not the page, the keyboard, or the corner of the desk you actually work over.

A clamp lamp fixes that by putting an adjustable light exactly where you need it. A flexible head lets you aim the beam onto the desk and away from the screen, and it clamps to the edge so it costs you no surface space.

Worth knowing before you buy: Colour temperature matters as much as brightness. A cooler white helps focus during the day; a warmer tone in the evening is easier on tired eyes. A lamp with both, plus dimming, adapts to the whole workday.

Stop the desk surface reflecting back at you

A glossy or pale desk under a lamp becomes a second light source, throwing brightness up into your face from below. It is subtle, and it is part of why some desks feel harsh no matter which lamp you use.

A large matte mat absorbs that. It is the least obvious lighting fix on this list and the one people are most surprised by.

Last, and genuinely optional: Do this after the other four. If the desk is dark wood already, you can skip it.

Light the wall behind the desk, not just the desk itself

The first four fixes are all aimed at the desk surface. But if the wall and room behind your monitor stay completely dark, the screen becomes the only bright thing in your field of view - and that contrast is its own source of eye strain, the reason editors and streamers keep a light on behind the monitor even though it lights nothing they're working on.

A slim LED bar standing in the corner behind or beside the desk fixes this without adding another fixture on the desk itself. It washes the wall in soft light instead, and because it's RGB, the same lamp can sit on a low warm-white setting for work and switch to something more atmospheric once you're done.

Worth knowing before you buy: for actual work sessions, keep it dim and warm behind the monitor. Save the color-cycling and music-sync modes for downtime - the point here is to lift the room off black, not give yourself a second thing to look at while you work.

If you only do one

  1. Step one. A lamp at desk level. Everything else on this list is an adjustment to a problem that step one has already mostly solved.
